6 Tips to Avoid a DUI During the Holiday Season

The holiday season is upon us; A season full of parties and events where there will be alcohol. Unfortunately, with all these festive activities there is a surplus of DUIs and alcohol-related driving accidents and fatalities between Thanksgiving and the new year.

For this blog post, our Criminal Law Attorneys  share how you can avoid getting a DUI and the many consequences that follow driving under the influence:

  1. Don’t drink and drive – The simplest way to avoid a DUI is don’t drive at all! These days, there are so many options for you to get to and from a holiday party safely if you plan on drinking. By not driving, you are keeping yourself, passengers, and everyone on the road safe.
  2. Call for a ride – Even if you live close, don’t get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking. Many DUI convictions include drivers who were less than a mile away from home. Just because you do not live far, does not mean your chances of making it home safely are higher. Call a cab, Uber, Lyft, or contact a sober family member or friend. After all, the fee of a ride is far cheaper than the cost of a DUI in Florida.
  3. Choose a reliable designated driver – Choose a designed driver who is not drinking. You don’t want their driving impaired whatsoever; it’s their responsibility as the designated driver to stay sober.
  4. Take public transportation– Whether the party is near a bus route, train, or subway, you’ll be safer on a public transit system where someone else is bringing you home.
  5. Stay at the host’s house – If you’re planning on drinking at a holiday event or party, ask the host (if appropriate) if you can sleep at his/her place. If not, stay with another friend who lives nearby that you can get to by a designated driver, public transit, or rideshare. You can enjoy the night without having to worry about how you will get home.
  6. Book a hotel – If you have a holiday party coming up and you plan on drinking, book a room at a nearby hotel. You will have peace of mind knowing you can easily walk or catch a cab to the hotel without having to drive home.

The tips above are to help you avoid a DUI by not driving at all. Please don’t drink and drive. If you avoid driving altogether, you will be free from getting a DUI and its consequences.

It is easy for our judgment and common sense to be off while under the influence of alcohol. Plan your trip to and from the party before the day of the event, so you know how you will get home safe. A DUI in Jacksonville can ruin your holiday season, result in jail time, amongst other consequences.
