3 Factors to Consider to Become Eligible for a Social Security Disability Benefits

January 14, 2021 by Harris Guidi Rosner

Many people are at the risk of running into a myriad of accidents – whether in a vehicle collision, a bone-breaking fall, and more. Even a simple fender bender has a 30 percent chance of causing a temporary disabling condition, one that forces the victim to miss months of work and other daily activities.

Others suffer from graver repercussions and have to deal with a permanent disability, which can compromise their source of living, hobbies, and other everyday functions that lower their quality of life. Either way, losing the ability to work can have costly consequences, which is why victims can get monthly disability benefits through the Social Security Administration.

Applying for Social Security Benefits

These benefits can cover your financial needs well into your retirement, but not all disabilities will be considered eligible for this program. With that in mind, you can apply for Social Security Disability insurance if you meet the following requirements:

1. Your Disability will Prevent You from Working for 15 Years or More

If the accident causes a severe injury that leaves you jobless, or at least unable to continue work in your given field for at least 15 years, then you have a stronger chance of getting approval for your case.

2. You Do Not have Substantial Gainful Activity

Even if you do have a serious disability, but your earnings are at least $1,180 monthly, then you will not qualify for social security disability insurance. This is because you are deemed to have substantial gainful activity, which means you can still earn even with disabilities.

3. You Need to Have Sufficient Work Credits

Paying your social security taxes and making a living can already earn points for your work credits, wherein you can gain one for every $1,320 income. You need to at least have 20 work credits in the last 10 years before the disability, especially if you already have 40 or more credits over the last few years.

Of course, the requirements can change depending on your age and realistic work experience. For victims under 24-years-old, you will only need at least six work credits within the three years prior to your disability.

The Bottom Line: Understanding the Characteristics and Requirements to Qualify for a Social Security Disability
